Job Description:
Duties/Responsibilities
Responsible for collecting, processing, performance and results on specimens obtained from infants, preschool, school age, adolescents and adults by finger stick or venipuncture.
Must demonstrate knowledge of how age and disease states affect the results.
Must understand and perform quality control, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and other duties that may be assigned.
Communicate with the ordering providers when recollections are needed due to sample rejections.
Determine specimen validity within a reasonable timeframe of receiving the specimen.
Identify, diagnose, and repair issues that may arise with the laboratory equipment.
Receive incoming calls and answer technical questions.
Use established lab protocols to perform laboratory tests and correctly document the results of those tests.
Verify all test results and ensure that they correctly matched with the specimen.
Technicians must have: hand and finger dexterity for technical work in the laboratory and on all computers and instruments: ability to understand and work with children of all developmental ages when blood specimens are collected; mechanical and technical expertise to operate and repair instruments; visual acuity and sense of color discrimination and good hearing; ability to move from area to area, hold and/or restrain patients, carry phlebotomy trays, boxes of supplies, equipment, specimens, stoop, bend or kneel as necessary for trouble shooting and PM work.
This staff member may be required to perform other reasonably related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor or other management. Required Skills/Abilities
Associates degree in Medical Technology, biology, or other related science required.
Must have interned and graduated from an accredited medical technology program.
Must be registered with a recognized accreditation agency. Otherwise, certification must be obtained within six months of hire.
Experience preferred but not required.
