Medical Lab Technician Jobs in Campus, IL

A Medical Lab Technician (MLT) plays a critical role in the med tech industry, performing a wide range of tasks crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Their primary responsibilities include preparing samples for analysis, performing microscopic examination of tissues, cells and other specimens, conducting chemical analyses of body fluids, blood typing, carrying out complex protein and nucleic acid tests on patient samples, and maintaining sophisticated laboratory equipment. MLTs are also instrumental in the analysis and interpretation of results, and they work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to deliver the best patient care.

Important skills for a successful MLT include attention to detail, manual dexterity, technical skills, and the ability to work under pressure. They should also have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as good communication abilities. In terms of certification, individuals typically require an associate degree in medical technology or a related field. However, many employers prefer candidates with professional certification from organizations such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Prior to becoming an MLT, a person may have roles as a Phlebotomist, a Laboratory Assistant or a Medical Assistant. These roles provide the foundational knowledge and practical experience required to progress to an MLT position.
