They carry out polysomnographic tests to study sleep patterns in patients, evaluate and interpret these studies, and provide treatment recommendations. Prior to becoming a Sleep Technologist, an individual may have various roles in the healthcare or tech industry. They might start as a Medical Laboratory Technician, where they would gain experience in handling and analyzing patient samples. Alternatively, they could work as a Respiratory Therapist, helping patients with breathing issues, which are often linked to sleep disorders. Prior experience as a Registered Nurse can also be beneficial, as it provides a broad foundation in patient care. In terms of certifications, a Sleep Technologist should ideally hold a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification, which is the gold standard in the field. They may also need to be certified in CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS).
