Surgical Technologist Jobs in Maine
A Surgical Technologist, also known as a Surgical Tech or Operating Room Technician, is an integral part of the surgical team in the med tech industry. Their primary responsibility is to assist doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals during surgical procedures. Surgical Technologists prepare the operating room, ensuring all necessary equipment and surgical tools are sterilized and readily available. They also assist during the operation by passing instruments to surgeons, holding organs in place, or using retractors. After the surgery, they may help dress wounds and transfer patients to recovery rooms.
Important skills for a Surgical Technologist include strong attention to detail, the ability to work well under pressure, good physical stamina for long surgeries, and excellent hand-eye coordination. In addition to these skills, Surgical Technologists usually need to hold a certification. The most common certifications are the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting and the Tech in Surgery - Certified (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing. Prior to becoming a Surgical Technologist, a person may have roles such as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), a Medical Assistant, or even work in medical equipment sterilization, to gain experience in the medical field.
